2006 Porsche Cayman S – 10 Fast Facts
3.4-Litre Engine
The 2006 Porsche Cayman S is powered by a 3.4-litre boxer engine. Developed specifically for the Cayman S, the six-cylinder engine delivers maximum output of 217 kW (295 bhp). Featuring Porsche’s VarioCam Plus system for variable intake camshaft control and valve timing, the maximum torque of 340 Newton meters is available between 4,400 and 6,000 rpm.
Six-Speed Manual
Cayman S is equipped as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox. Rapid shifts are executed through a short-throw mechanism. A dual-mass flywheel assures smooth power delivery and quiet idling in neutral. The final drive ratio has been carefully selected for optimum sports performance.
Or Tiptronic S
Five-speed automatic transmission Tiptronic S was available as an option. It addition of the automatic mode, the Tiptronic S features a manual mode with gearshift controls on the steering wheel. Gearshifts are completed in about 0.2 seconds with virtually no interruption in drive.
Optional PASM
Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) provides continuous adjustment of the damping force at all four corners of the car to match the driving style and changing road conditions. With PASM, the ride height is 10 mm lower than that of a standard steel-sprung suspension. The driver can select between “Normal” or the firmer “Sport” damping setting.
Sport Chrono Package
With the optional Sport Chrono Package, the Cayman S can be even sportier. When Sport mode is selected, the engine management system modifies the throttle map, and engine variables are adapted to create a more aggressive level of power response. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) switches to the firmer-damping Sport mode, enabling faster turn-in and flatter cornering. Also a greater degree of oversteer is allowed on turn-in and exit, especially in lower-speed cornering sequences.
Sport Exhaust
In the Cayman S, the exhaust system plays the final role in maximizing engine performance. Two headers direct the exhaust gases through a twin-tract layout, to reduce back pressure. This layout allows greater throughput than a conventional exhaust, which improves both power and torque. It also generates a distinctive sound for the Cayman S.
Braking Performance
Braking power is guaranteed by the cross-drilled, inner-vented brake discs measuring 318 millimetres (12.5”) at the front and 299 millimetres (11.8”) at the rear axle.
Optional PCCB
Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) were available as an option for the Cayman S. They come with even larger brake discs measuring 350 millimetres (13.8”) in diameter and are made of a special ceramic material for even lighter weight.
How Fast is It?
2006 Porsche Cayman S with the manul gearbox can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds and reach 200 km/h in 18.6 seconds. With the Tiptronic S the sprint to 100 km/h takes 6.1 seconds and to 200 km/h 21.6 seconds.
Top Speed
Top speed of the 2006 Porsche Cayman S is 275 km/h with the manual transmission and 267 km/h with the Tiptronic S.
